Best of both worlds

Some camps are set in magnificent surroundings but fixed: others offer game viewing on the move, at the expense of five star facilities. Roving Bushtops offers the best of both worlds. The camp base sits in the heart of the Seronera Valley (Central Serengeti). From the end of January to mid-April, Roving Bushtops follows the migration to the Kusini Area in the Southern Serengeti. The concept of roving after the herds harks back to the pioneering spirit of early explorers, but now we have been able to add a highly efficient, 21st century luxury safari experience.

With only eight tents this camps breaths intimacy and gives you the chance to fully indulge in the surroundings. We use the word ‘tent’, but in reality you will stay within a stunningly appointed five-star private room; it just happens to be under canvas in the heart of the African Bush. From here you can enjoy your own little piece of paradise. Your personal butler will make sure you are well taken care off; a cold drink, a Serengeti safari midnight snack, complimentary laundry service or a relaxing massage. Just ask and they will take care of it.

Glorious comfort extends to your en-suite bathroom, equipped with flushing toilet, bath, vanity basin and showers. Other highlights include a writing desk, secure safe for your valuables and a host of imaginative decorative touches, including locally sourced furniture and fittings. Permanent 220v AC power and complimentary Wi-Fi ensure creature comforts are matched by a connection to the world (which you may or may not want!). Please note that, because of the remote location, both wireless and mobile phone connections can be slow and intermittent.

As you wonder whether there is anywhere else on earth that you’d rather be than at Roving Bushtops, you can jump to your feet to explore more than a hundred square metres of luxurious wooden decking, featuring a sunken bathtub, sun loungers and dining table – ideal should you want to enjoy a meal in privacy. Prepare yourself from some endless gazing; each tent can be opened on three sides during the day, offering views at your surroundings and its wide vistas whilst listening to the Serengeti soundtrack. At the heart of the camp the reception, lounge and dining areas are set. There’s even a fine wine wall with a mini library. An ideal place to meet and chat or settle into a chair on the wooden deck en enjoy your peace of mind. Don’t forget to order that cocktail.

Activities at Roving Bushtops Camp

From Roving Bushtops you can witness life at its most raw, thrilling and captivating, from the exceptional grandeur of the big five to the shimmering glory of local birdlife - and from the vast herds of wildebeest, zebras and gazelles to the silent presence of solitary crocodiles. All game drive vehicles are open; giving you a full 360 degrees perspective of the bush. You can even take a walk on the wild side during a private nature walk through the African bush. For obvious reasons, this option is not available when the grass is long, but when it is short, staying close to the ground is the most exciting and satisfying way to explore the landscape, spot birds and animals, and identify tracks. And for a different perspective on the area, you can book a balloon safari (at an additional cost) or visit the local Robanda school and meet the lovely children.

After a hard day in the Bush, or simply relaxing in your downtime, nothing can quite match an expert massage enjoyed on the privacy of your deck, watching the ever-changing magic of the Serengeti weave its spell before you. You can probably picture the scene. Enticing, isn’t it? Now, you maybe would not expect too much of the food here in a mobile camp in the middle of the Serengeti. Well, guess again. The staff at Roving Bushtops are (almost) as passionate about haute cuisine as they are about safaris. The chefs will prepare a combination of the finest international, continental and local cuisine and can adapt to any dietary needs if given warning. A sumptuous four-course-meal. With a campfire glowing outside, you watch the sun sink over the vast Serengeti plains while a sumptuous four-course-meal is being served - life in the bush doesn’t get much better.

Tripadvisor comments Roving Bushtops Camp

Wow, what a truly magical stay and quite easily the most authentic safari experience I’ve ever had. Roving Bushtops is like no other and you can’t help but feel at one with nature whilst staying here. The unique rooms are decorated beautifully and the bed was incredibly comfortable. The game viewing was phenomenal and saw so many various big cat sightings. Again, every detail is so well thought of and done so flawlessly. The cuisine was magnificent and the friendly staff really could not do enough, such a delight.

Spent the last two nights at Roving Bushtops in central Serengeti - it was incredible. I can’t believe they can move the entire camp up from the south. The tents are really luxurious and the staff goes above and beyond, especially Philip, Samwel, and Amos (both of them)! They’ve really thought of everything. Our guide Amos found us a ton of big cats over four game drives (leopard and cub, lions and cubs, and lots of cheetahs and cubs!) Thank you so much what an amazing experience!
