Olakira Migration Camp is one of the few tented camps that move between two sites in the Serengeti throughout the year, the north and the south. The reason for the move is that visitors will be able to witness the Great Migration herds, no matter what time of the year. July to October wildebeest bravely cross the treacherous Mara River, risking being eaten by crocodiles, then during the winter months, they are in the southern Serengeti to graze and calve. Depending on your visit, you may get the chance to see the wildebeest cross the river, or witness them on the other side building up their herd.
The main canvassed mess tent area comprises the lounge and dining area. Designed to fit in with the surrounding environment, the lounge area has large sofas that look out through the open side of the tent for the magnificent vistas. It is a great place to curl up with a book or meet with other travellers and discuss the joys seen during the day. There is also a seating area outside so you can curl yourself up in a blanket and sit under the stars. Next to the lounge area is the dining area where you will have the chance to enjoy your breakfast, lunch and dinner in comfort, or you can take your meals outside so you can enjoy your surroundings as you dine on authentic African delicacies. Each meal is prepared in the camp and creates a selection of western and African dishes to choose from. If you want to take a picnic on your game drives or other excursions, the onsite chefs will be accommodating, creating a feast to take into the bush.
Stay in one of the nine canvas tents that mix the luxury of a hotel with the natural environment of the Serengeti. The king-sized beds are sat on cast-iron frames and are draped with netting to give you comforting nights’ sleep. Throughout the canvassed tent are handwoven rugs and wooden furnishings, adding to the natural design. Each tent has an en-suite bathroom with hot running water, a flushing toilet, and an authentic outdoor bucket shower. You will also have a private veranda that you can lounge on and enjoy the views of the surrounding areas, or even take your lunch here for a bit of privacy.
Activities at Olakira Migration Camp
Head out on a game drive in either the open-sided vehicles with canvas roofs or the closed vehicles that have the pop-up roofs. On your game drive, you will have the chance to enjoy animal encounters. Your expert guide will teach you about the surrounding areas of the Serengeti, take you to the hotspots of wildlife sightings, and discuss with you the tracking progress of herds and predators. If you want to enjoy the plains from a unique perspective, head out on a hot-air balloon safari at an additional cost. You will soar with the birds and watch as the herds gallop below you before you set down for a delicious champagne bush breakfast.
When the tented camp is in northern Serengeti, you will be able to enjoy a walking safari through the bush. You will have the chance to get up close with the natural wonders of the plains, learning about the wildlife ecosystem, the medicinal plants, tracking patterns, and maybe even have the chance to have an up-close wildlife encounter. Whilst you stay at the northern camp you can also visit one of the villages nearby to learn about the Kuria culture, watch traditional dancing. You can also head to the local market and shop or handmade souvenirs and crafts from the villagers.

A safari way beyond my wildest dreams. Guides knew how to track the animals and we saw them all. Open vehicles allow for better viewing than closed vehicle with pop up top. We tried both so ask for the open one when you book. Large comfortable tents and bedding, flush toilets, hot bucket showers, open bar, and gourmet type meals. Camp staff couldn't do enough for you! Free daily laundry service so you don't need to pack a lot. We would definitely stay at this camp again.

Wonderful game drives with Qamara who always spotted the very well hidden animals - leopards, cheetahs, lions and their cubs, dik diks, impalas ... - or drove us further than planned to gape in admiration at a multitude of elephants or at the many of zebras and wildebeests migrating ... Great staff always warmly welcoming us back from our drives ... Delicious dinners shared with the other guests in the evening after relaxing in front of a huge fire facing the Serengeti horizon ... How hard it was to leave the camp! Thank you to all at Kimondo camp for unforgettable moments!
